SEN Teaching Assistant - Complex Needs - South West London

Full-time, long-term to permanent September 2026 start. Term-time only, 8:30am to 3:45pm £93 to £98 PAYE per day

If you have worked with children with severe or profound learning difficulties, you know how much of this work goes unnoticed. The patience it takes to wait for a response most people would miss. The skill in reading a child who cannot tell you what they need. You also know the difference between a setting that understands this and one that leaves you to figure it out on your own.

The school

This is a specialist primary special school in South West London supporting children aged 3 to 11 with Severe Learning Difficulties (SLD), Profound and Multiple Learning Difficulties (PMLD), and Autism. Every pupil holds an EHCP. Many are non-verbal or at very early stages of communication, and the whole environment is built around that reality.

Education and therapy run side by side through the school day. The curriculum is personalised to each child, with a strong focus on early development, communication, and functional independence. Staff are knowledgeable, well-trained, and genuinely close as a team. Expectations for every pupil are high, whatever the complexity of their needs.

The school is accessible from Wimbledon, Raynes Park, and Kingston, with good transport links across South West London.

The role

  • Support children individually and in small groups across the school day
  • Help pupils communicate using AAC, visual supports, and alternative communication methods
  • Support personal care and sensory and water-based activities as part of daily provision
  • Work alongside therapists and Teachers around each child
  • Build the consistent, trusting relationships that early development depends on

This is hands-on work with children at the very start of their learning. Progress is measured in small steps that matter enormously. You will see them up close.

Who could this suit

You may already work in a special school, a residential setting, or in care. You may have supported non-verbal children or worked as a therapy assistant. Graduates in psychology or education with a genuine interest in complex needs are welcome. Prior school experience is not essential. Comfort with personal care and physical support is.
