SEN Teaching Assistant - Early Years and Primary - South West London
£93 - £98 PAYE per day, weekly payment
Full-time, term-time only
When a child has no words yet, how do you know they are reaching for one? When a four-year-old goes rigid at the sound of a bell, do you read it as defiance or as a nervous system doing exactly what it was built to do? If those questions resonate, this role is worth your time.
This role is based in the primary phase of a specialist setting, supporting pupils aged 3 to 11 across Early Years, Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2. Children here have Severe Learning Difficulties, Profound and Multiple Learning Difficulties, and Autism, often alongside physical disabilities, sensory impairments and complex communication needs. Many pupils are non-verbal or have very limited speech. Some are only beginning to understand that communication is even possible. Every pupil holds an EHCP.
What the school offers
Class sizes are small, and staffing ratios are high, so support is genuinely personal rather than spread thin. Pupils use a wide range of communication approaches, including AAC and visual supports, tailored to each child's way of taking in the world. The curriculum is adapted and tailored to each pupil, with a strong focus on functional independence and early communication rather than fixed academic targets. Staff are knowledgeable, well supported, and given real opportunities for professional development. Leadership is consistent, and the culture is warm and connected, built on a genuine belief that every child can learn and progress regardless of how complex their needs are.
The role
You will work directly alongside pupils, sometimes 1:1 and sometimes in small groups, helping them access learning in whatever form works for them on that day. Expect to support communication attempts, regulate sensory overwhelm, model and reinforce routines, and provide personal care with patience and dignity. Progress is often small and slow to show. It still counts.
This role suits people who notice the details others miss. You might be a strong fit if you have:
Experience working with pupils with severe or profound learning difficulties, complex needs or Autism A grounded, patient approach to behaviour that comes from understanding rather than reacting Confidence supporting personal care needs with respect An interest in AAC or alternative communication, even if you are still building that experience A background in psychology, education, childhood studies or a related field, or relevant transferable experience from care or support work
Prior SEND experience is valuable but not essential. Personality, patience and a genuine willingness to learn matter more here than a long CV.
The details
Full-time, Monday to Friday, term-time only, September start, £93 to £98 per day, PAYE only, Long-term to permanent contract. Located in South West London
