Some people arrive at SEND education through a job advert. Others arrive because something in their life, a family member, a personal experience, a role that changed the way they saw things, pointed them in this direction before they had the words for it. Whichever route brought you here, if working with children who have complex needs feels like the right thing to do, this is a school worth knowing about.

The school

This is a specialist SEND school in South West London supporting children and young people aged 4 to 19 with severe learning difficulties, profound and multiple learning difficulties, and Autism. Many pupils are non-verbal. Some have complex physical needs alongside their learning difficulties. Progress here is real, but it is rarely loud. It is a child tolerating something new. A young person communicating a need they could not express before. Small moments that take months of patient, consistent work to arrive at.

The school is one of those rare places where the environment genuinely matches the ethos. It is calm, structured, and warm. Staff are well supported, properly trained, and treated as professionals. People tend to stay, which matters in a setting where the children rely so heavily on knowing and trusting the adults around them. New staff are brought in carefully and supported thoroughly, not handed a timetable and left to work it out.

The role

  • Supporting pupils with SLD, PMLD, and ASC across a full school day
  • Building consistent, trusting relationships with individual pupils
  • Assisting with personal care as part of the daily routine
  • Supporting pupils during hydrotherapy sessions
  • Working as part of a close team of teachers, therapists, and support staff
  • Helping pupils build communication, independence, and confidence over time

Who this suits

Care assistants, children's residential support workers, youth workers, learning mentors, drama graduates, and anyone with experience supporting people with complex needs are all encouraged to apply. A teaching qualification is not required. If you have supported non-verbal young people, dysregulated young people, or anyone who needed a steady and reliable adult in their corner, your experience is relevant here.

Personality and attitude matter more than what is on your CV. The school will train the right person.
