Parker Smith Inclusion is working with a large, all-through school for pupils aged 4 - 16, with a strong commitment to inclusion. They are part of a small academy trust with two other high-achieving secondaries in East Ham.
A thriving school community with over 100 pupils with autism. They have a dedicated resource provision for children with autism, and autistic students are also supported in mainstream classes across primary and secondary. Their recent Ofsted inspection highlighted the high quality of our SEN provision.
Duties of a SEN Teaching Assistant:
Supporting Learning and Development
- Individualized Support: Provide one-on-one or small-group support tailored to the child's specific needs.
- Adapted Resources: Prepare and adapt learning materials to suit the child’s learning style and abilities.
- Behavior Support: Implement strategies to help manage behaviors, such as using visual aids, schedules, or sensory tools

Communication Facilitation
- Alternative Communication: Use tools like PECS (Picture Exchange Communication System), Makaton, or other communication aids if verbal communication is limited.
- Social Skills Development: Help the child practice and develop social interaction skills, such as turn-taking, active listening, or maintaining eye contact.
Promoting Inclusion
- Classroom Participation: Support the child in engaging with peers and participating in group activities.
- Environment Adaptation: Modify classroom settings or activities to make them more accessible and comfortable for the child.
Emotional and Behavioral Support
- Calming Techniques: Use strategies to help the child regulate emotions, such as mindfulness exercises or sensory breaks.
- Behavior Plans: Implement behavior management plans created by SENCOs (Special Educational Needs Coordinators) or other professionals.
Liaising with Professionals and Families
- Collaboration: Work closely with teachers, SENCOs, speech and language therapists, and occupational therapists.
- Parental Communication: Provide feedback to parents or carers about the child's progress and challenges.
Monitoring and Reporting
- Progress Tracking: Keep records of the child’s achievements and areas for improvement.
- Reporting: Share observations and updates with the teacher or SENCO to inform lesson planning and support strategies.
Encouraging Independence
- Skill Development: Support the child in developing life skills, such as organizing belongings or following routines.
- Promoting Confidence: Encourage the child to attempt tasks independently with appropriate support.
Safeguarding
- Child Protection: Be vigilant and report any safeguarding concerns following school policies and procedures.
- Health and Safety: Ensure the child’s physical safety and well-being, particularly if they have sensory sensitivities or behavioral challenges.
