SEN Tutor - Kingston

Full-time, immediate start

£650 PAYE per week, permanent contract opportunity

Which of the pupils you have supported would have done better with an adult who came to them, rather than a school they could not face?

This SEN Tutor post is open to someone with at least 1 full year of school experience. You will tutor pupils with SEND one-to-one in their homes and in community spaces such as libraries, across Kingston upon Thames and nearby areas, including Surbiton and Teddington. There is no classroom and no base school.

Pupils have a range of needs, including ASC, ADHD, SLCN, MLD and SEMH, and they are of all ages, from primary to secondary. The post pays £130 PAYE per day, 8:30am to 4:30pm, and is long-term with a route to permanent.

If your current role keeps you in the same room on the same timetable every week, this is a different kind of day. You plan your own sessions around one pupil at a time, and you get to know their family well. If the one-to-one moments are the part of school support you value most, this role gives you whole sessions of them.

Most of the young people you will work with are out of school right now. For some, anxiety has made the school building too much. Others have health needs, and some are between settings after a placement broke down. A lot of them have lost confidence in adults and in learning, so the first goal is often trust.

Learning builds from there. Over time, the aim is to keep each pupil’s education moving and help them take steps back into school or into a new setting.

Your working day moves between family homes and community venues around Kingston. Sessions are one-to-one, so you can go at the pupil’s pace and change your plan when something is not working. You will be part of a wider specialist team, and you will need to be comfortable managing your own day out in the community.

What you will do

  • Travel to pupils’ homes and community spaces such as local libraries for one-to-one sessions
  • Plan and adapt learning for pupils of any age, from early primary through to secondary
  • Build steady, trusting relationships with pupils who have found school hard or frightening
  • Record how each session went and keep families and the professionals around the pupil updated
  • Help pupils rebuild routine and confidence as they work towards a return to education

About you

  • A real personal interest in SEND, especially autism, ADHD, SLCN, MLD and SEMH needs
  • At least one full year of experience working in a school. This is essential
  • Patience with pupils whose progress comes in small steps
  • Confidence working independently and getting around Kingston and nearby areas between visits
  • Clear, kind communication with parents and carers

The full school year is the one requirement that cannot be flexed. After that, this post could suit SEN TAs, LSAs, HLTAs, cover supervisors, learning mentors, behaviour mentors, ELSAs and teachers, qualified or unqualified. If your school year was in mainstream and you supported pupils with these needs there, you are welcome to apply.

Your pay is £130 PAYE per day, paid weekly with no umbrella company and no hidden costs. The contract is long-term, with a route to permanence, so you have time to see pupils' progress.

Parker Smith Inclusion is an ethical recruitment consultancy that works exclusively in SEND. It places people in long-term and permanent roles only and pays everyone through PAYE. The team has placed more than 1,500 educators across over 300 schools, and educators have left more than 400 five-star Google reviews. Free CPD is open to every candidate.

The start date is ASAP, and interviews are being arranged now, so an application this week means an earlier interview. To talk it through first, call Parker Smith Inclusion on 0203 011 4848.
