SENCO - Primary School

Wandsworth, South West London

£57,632 - £62,496 per annum, depending on experience

September 2026 start

*** Interviews are organised ASAP ***

You have spent years in the classroom understanding how children learn, and more recently, you have found yourself drawn to the children who need something different. You have taken on more responsibility around SEND, quietly become the person colleagues come to when they are not sure what to do next, and have started to wonder whether a named SENCO role is the right next step. Or perhaps you are already in post, doing the job well, but working in a setting where the support around you does not match the weight of what you are carrying. Either way, this is worth reading.

This is a permanent SENCO post in a primary school in Wandsworth. The leadership is strong, the resources are properly in place, and inclusion here is taken seriously at every level of the organisation. This is a school where the SENCO is a genuine leader, not an administrator with a large inbox.

The salary range is £57,632 to £62,496, reflecting UPS 1-3 with an Inner London allowance. The role is term-time only and starts in September 2026.

What the Role Involves

The post is non-class-based but carries group and intervention teaching responsibilities, reviewed termly in line with children's needs. You will work closely with the Assistant Headteacher for Inclusion and take a clear strategic lead across all areas of SEND.

Day to day, that means:

  • Leading and managing the EHCP process across the school, ensuring every plan is current, accurate, and meets its statutory obligations. You will coordinate reviews, liaise with external agencies, and make sure the process works properly for children and families, not just on paper.
  • Overseeing provision mapping and using data to track pupil progress, identify need, and demonstrate impact. You will need to be comfortable analysing information and presenting it clearly to senior leaders and governors.
  • Leading, managing, and mentoring the inclusion team, including teaching assistants and other support staff. You will conduct appraisals, lead INSET, and develop the skills of the people around you.
  • Working alongside class teachers to identify barriers to learning and find practical, effective ways to remove them. This is hands-on, collaborative work. You will be in classrooms, in conversations, and in the details.
  • Building and maintaining strong relationships with parents and carers, keeping them informed, involved, and genuinely part of their child's school journey.
  • Contributing to school improvement planning and reporting to the governing board. This is a leadership role that carries responsibility.
  • Safeguarding sits at the centre of everything this school does. You will be expected to know the procedures, follow them rigorously, and model that commitment to everyone around you.

Who This Role Suits

You are a qualified teacher with at least five years of classroom experience and a genuine commitment to inclusive practice. You have a strong working knowledge of the EHCP process and the confidence to lead a team and manage a substantial caseload, while maintaining sight of the bigger picture.

If you already hold the NASENCo Award, that is valued. If you do not yet hold it, the school will support you to work towards it. What matters most is that you understand what genuine inclusion looks like in practice and that you have the track record, or the clear potential, to deliver it.

You might be an established SENCO ready for a setting where leadership support and resources match your ambition. You might be a deputy SENCO, an inclusion lead, or an experienced specialist teacher who has been doing much of this work already and is ready to make it official. If you have been the person your school quietly relies on for SEND and you are ready to step forward, this role is open to you.

Resilience, strong interpersonal skills, and the ability to handle complexity without becoming overwhelmed are all essential. So is a genuine belief that every child, whatever their need, deserves high expectations.
