SEND Class Teacher - Secondary Special School

Barnet, North London | M1–M6 Outer London + SEN Allowance | Full-time, Permanent or Temp to Perm | January 2027

Are you a teacher who enjoys adapting learning around the pupil rather than expecting every pupil to fit the same curriculum?

Parker Smith Inclusion is recruiting a SEND Class Teacher for a specialist school in Barnet, joining its secondary provision from January 2027.

This could suit an experienced SEND Teacher, but it could also be an excellent move for a primary-trained teacher who enjoys highly differentiated teaching and wants to develop their career within specialist education.

The pupils need learning to be practical, accessible and carefully adapted around individual communication, learning and independence needs. You will teach across the curriculum rather than specialising in one secondary subject.

What will the role involve?

You will take responsibility for your own class while leading an established team of Teaching Assistants.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Planning and delivering highly differentiated lessons

  • Teaching across a broad and personalised curriculum

  • Adapting learning around individual SEND needs

  • Developing communication and independence

  • Creating engaging learning experiences for pupils working at different developmental levels

  • Monitoring individual progress

  • Leading and directing classroom Teaching Assistants

  • Creating clear, consistent classroom routines

  • Working collaboratively with colleagues across the school

  • Contributing to individual pupil targets and wider SEND provision

Who are we looking for?

Essential:

  • Qualified Teacher Status (QTS)

  • Strong classroom practice

  • Confidence differentiating learning significantly

  • Calm and supportive approach

  • Ability to lead a classroom team

  • Commitment to safeguarding and pupil progress

  • Creativity and flexibility in your teaching

SEND experience?

Previous SEND experience would certainly be valuable, but you do not necessarily need to have spent your entire career in a special school.

The school is also interested in teachers who have the right approach and genuinely want to develop their SEND knowledge. A primary teaching background is particularly relevant because of the cross-curricular and highly differentiated nature of the role.

This could therefore suit:

  • SEND Teachers

  • Primary Teachers looking to move into SEND

  • Teachers experienced with autism or learning difficulties

  • Teachers working in specialist provisions or ARPs

  • Mainstream teachers with significant SEND experience

Why consider moving into specialist education?

You have the opportunity to teach according to what your pupils actually need rather than constantly measuring success against age-related expectations.

Progress may mean stronger communication, greater independence, sustained engagement or mastering a skill a pupil has been working towards for some time.

You will also have a supportive staff structure around you and a generous PPA allocation, giving you appropriate time away from direct teaching to plan and manage your responsibilities.

Salary and contract

M1–M6 Outer London + SEN allowance, depending on experience.
Full-time, permanent position.
January 2027 start, with earlier availability potentially considered.
