SEND HLTA - Higher Level Teaching Assistant | Barnet

Barnet, North London
Full-time | Long-term
Pay dependent on experience and responsibilities

Are you an experienced SEND Teaching Assistant who is ready for more responsibility but does not necessarily want to become a class teacher?

I am recruiting a SEND Higher Level Teaching Assistant (HLTA) for a school in Barnet.

This position sits somewhere between traditional classroom support and teaching. You will still work directly with pupils, but will also take greater responsibility for interventions, small-group learning and supporting the delivery of lessons.

It could be an excellent next step for an experienced SEN Teaching Assistant, SEND Teaching Assistant or HLTA who already feels confident taking the lead when required.

Your responsibilities could include

  • Leading small-group SEND interventions

  • Supporting pupils with individual learning plans

  • Delivering planned learning activities

  • Providing short periods of class or group supervision where appropriate

  • Adapting resources to meet additional needs

  • Supporting less experienced Teaching Assistants

  • Working closely with teachers and the SENCO

  • Recording and communicating pupil progress

  • Supporting pupils with regulation, engagement and independence

  • Helping ensure SEND strategies are used consistently across the school day

What are we looking for?

Essential:

  • Strong previous classroom experience

  • Good understanding of SEND

  • Confidence leading individuals and groups

  • Strong literacy and numeracy skills

  • The ability to work independently while following teacher planning

  • Professional and reliable communication

Desirable:

  • HLTA qualification

  • Previous HLTA experience

  • Experience delivering SEND interventions

  • Experience within specialist provision

  • Previous responsibility for supporting or mentoring other TAs

Applicants without a formal HLTA qualification may still be considered where their practical experience is strong enough.

Why consider moving into an HLTA role?

Experienced Teaching Assistants can sometimes reach a point where they want greater responsibility without moving immediately into teacher training.

An HLTA position allows you to build experience leading learning, delivering interventions and contributing more significantly to pupil progress while remaining closely involved in SEND support.
