SEND Learning Support Assistant
Barking & Dagenham | September Start | Temp–Perm
A warm, community-focused primary school in Barking & Dagenham is looking for a calm, committed SEND Learning Support Assistant to join their team this September.
This is a school where relationships matter. Pupils are known well, staff work closely together, and support for children with additional needs is woven into everyday classroom life rather than treated as an add-on.
What the role actually looks like
You’ll be working closely with children who need a bit more help to access learning and feel confident in school. Some will need structured 1:1 support, others will benefit from small group work or quiet guidance within the classroom.
You’ll be supporting pupils with a range of needs including autism, ADHD, speech and language difficulties, and social, emotional and mental health needs. Some days will feel very structured; others will require flexibility, patience, and a good sense of humour.
A big part of the role is helping children feel safe, understood, and able to engage, not just academically, but socially and emotionally too.
You won’t be doing this alone. You’ll be working closely with class teachers and the SENCo, sharing strategies, adapting approaches, and being part of a team that genuinely values collaboration.
Who this role suits
This role would suit someone who:
- Stays calm when things are unpredictable
- Can build trust with children who may find school challenging
- Is consistent, kind, and resilient
- Enjoys being part of a team that supports each other
- Has SEND experience (helpful but not essential - the right attitude matters more)
Whether you’ve worked in education before or you’re looking to build a career in SEND, what matters most is your approach and your commitment to supporting children who need that extra level of care and understanding.
The opportunity
This is a temp-to-perm role, with the opportunity to move into a permanent contract after two terms for the right person. It’s a chance to really settle into a school, build relationships, and grow in a supportive environment rather than constantly moving between roles.
The school is well-resourced, supportive, and genuinely invested in developing both staff and pupils.
