SEND Teacher – Severe Learning Difficulties (SLD) | Hackney

Location: Hackney, East London
Contract: Full-time
Start Date: To be confirmed

Parker Smith Inclusion is working in partnership with a specialist school in Hackney to recruit an experienced and passionate SEND Teacher with a background in Severe Learning Difficulties (SLD).

This is an opportunity for a dedicated teacher who understands the needs of pupils with SLD and is committed to creating meaningful, engaging learning experiences that support every child to reach their potential.

We are looking for someone who has direct experience teaching pupils with severe learning difficulties and understands the importance of adapting the curriculum, communication and teaching approaches to meet a wide range of individual needs.

At Parker Smith Inclusion, we believe specialist education requires specialist understanding. We are keen to speak with teachers who are passionate about SEND and want to make a genuine difference to pupils' learning, communication, confidence and independence.

The Role

As an SLD Teacher, you will plan and deliver individualised learning opportunities that reflect pupils' developmental stages, abilities and support needs. You will work closely with Teaching Assistants and the wider school team to create a structured, nurturing environment where pupils feel safe, supported and encouraged to learn.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Planning and delivering differentiated lessons for pupils with severe learning difficulties.
  • Adapting the curriculum to provide accessible, meaningful and developmentally appropriate learning opportunities.
  • Developing pupils' communication, interaction, sensory engagement and independence skills.
  • Using appropriate teaching strategies and resources to engage pupils with different learning styles and abilities.
  • Working collaboratively with Teaching Assistants to ensure consistent support and effective classroom practice.
  • Setting individual learning targets and monitoring pupils' progress against their personal goals.
  • Creating a positive, structured and inclusive learning environment.
  • Supporting pupils' social and emotional development through patient, consistent and person-centred teaching.
  • Working with colleagues, parents and carers to support pupils' wider development and educational progress.
  • Ensuring that each pupil is valued as an individual and supported to achieve meaningful outcomes.

The Ideal Candidate

For this position, previous experience teaching pupils with Severe Learning Difficulties is essential. We are looking for a teacher who understands the specialist approaches required and can confidently adapt their teaching to meet complex learning needs.

You will need:

  • Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) or an appropriate recognised teaching qualification.
  • Direct teaching experience with pupils with SLD in a specialist school or comparable SEND provision.
  • A strong understanding of how to adapt teaching, learning activities and curriculum content for pupils with severe learning difficulties.
  • Experience setting individualised learning targets and assessing progress in line with pupils' abilities and developmental needs.
  • The ability to create engaging learning experiences that promote communication, participation and independence.
  • Strong teamwork skills and the ability to guide and work effectively with Teaching Assistants.
  • A patient, nurturing and adaptable approach, with high expectations for every learner.
  • A genuine passion for specialist education and a commitment to improving outcomes for pupils with SEND.
  • Experience supporting pupils with additional needs alongside SLD would be beneficial.
