SEND Teacher - KS3 to KS5 Autism

Barnet, North London | Full-time | Specialist SEND School

Parker Smith Inclusion is recruiting a SEND Teacher to take responsibility for a settled KS3–KS5 autism class within a specialist school in Barnet.

This is a really appealing opportunity for a teacher who enjoys highly individualised teaching and wants to join a classroom with an established, strong support team already in place.

The class includes pupils across KS3 to KS5 with a range of abilities, working broadly between pre-KS1 and KS1 standards in English and maths.

The role

You will be responsible for creating meaningful, accessible learning that reflects each pupil’s individual starting point.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Planning and delivering highly differentiated lessons

  • Teaching English and maths at pre-KS1 to KS1 levels

  • Supporting pupils with autism across KS3, KS4 and KS5

  • Developing communication, engagement and independence

  • Adapting learning around individual strengths and needs

  • Leading and directing an experienced classroom support team

  • Monitoring progress and contributing to individual learning targets

  • Creating a structured and predictable classroom environment

  • Working closely with the wider SEND team

What makes this role attractive?

This is not a class in crisis.

The pupils are settled, and there is already a strong team around the class, allowing the incoming teacher to focus on building relationships, developing learning and getting the best from the pupils.

Although the students are secondary and post-16 age, their academic levels are much earlier. This makes the role particularly suitable for someone who enjoys:

  • Highly differentiated teaching

  • Early developmental learning

  • Autism-specific practice

  • Small-step progress

  • Practical and engaging approaches to English and maths

Who are we looking for?

We would particularly like to hear from:

  • SEND Teachers

  • Autism Teachers

  • Special School Teachers

  • Primary-trained teachers interested in specialist education

  • Teachers experienced with pupils working below age-related expectations

Essential:

  • Strong understanding of differentiated teaching

  • Confidence supporting autistic pupils

  • Ability to lead a classroom team

  • Patient, flexible and creative approach

  • Full-time availability

Previous specialist school or autism experience would be highly desirable.

Why consider this opportunity?

Teaching older pupils working at early developmental levels requires a particular skill set.

You need to recognise meaningful progress, adapt constantly and teach the pupil in front of you rather than simply following an age-related curriculum.

In return, you will be joining a settled class with an experienced team already around you — giving you a strong foundation from which to teach.
