A Role for Teachers Who Believe in More Than Just Lessons

This role is for a SEND teacher who understands that education for autistic children is about far more than worksheets and timetables.

This is a setting where communication, emotional security, independence, and confidence are just as important as academic progress. The children you will be teaching need adults who understand Autism deeply, who can adapt their practice, and who genuinely believe that every child can develop skills for life, not just school.

If you are a teacher who wants to be part of a setting that focuses on nurturing children while also challenging them to grow, this role will suit you.

The Type of Setting

This is a specialist SEND environment supporting children whose primary need is Autism/ASC, alongside associated needs.

Pupils may also present with:

  • Speech, language and communication needs

  • Sensory processing differences

  • ADHD and attention regulation needs

  • Emotional regulation and anxiety

  • Social communication and interaction differences

  • Additional learning needs alongside Autism

The environment is designed to be structured, predictable, and sensory-aware. Teaching focuses on helping pupils feel safe, understood, and ready to learn, while also developing independence, social understanding, and real-world skills.

What Makes This Role Different

This role has a strong focus on:

  • Developing communication and interaction skills

  • Supporting emotional regulation through structure and routine

  • Teaching functional and life skills alongside the curriculum

  • Helping pupils build confidence and independence

  • Creating learning experiences that feel meaningful and relevant

  • Supporting pupils to prepare for transitions and future stages of education

This is not a purely academic SEND role. It is about supporting the whole child.

Your Day-to-Day as a SEND Teacher

In this role, you will:

  • Deliver highly adapted teaching for autistic learners

  • Build a classroom culture based on safety, predictability, and trust

  • Use visual supports, structure, and communication strategies

  • Support sensory regulation and emotional wellbeing

  • Teach social communication, independence, and functional skills

  • Work closely with specialist support staff and therapists

  • Adapt expectations and outcomes to match each pupil’s profile

  • Celebrate progress that may look different from mainstream success

The Honest Side

Autism-focused teaching requires patience, flexibility, and emotional intelligence.

Some pupils will experience anxiety, sensory overload, or emotional shutdowns. Some days will require you to change plans, slow things down, and focus on regulation before learning.

For teachers who genuinely understand Autism and value relationship-based practice, this is deeply purposeful and meaningful work.

Who This Role Is For

This role is well suited to teachers who:

  • Have strong experience with Autism and communication needs

  • Understand sensory processing and structured teaching approaches

  • Value routine, predictability, and emotional safety

  • Enjoy teaching life skills alongside academic content

  • Want to support pupils to become more confident and independent

  • Actively choose Autism-focused SEND education

This role is not suited to teachers looking for a mainstream-style classroom, light SEND, or short-term experience.
