SEND Teaching Assistant - Autism & Communication | Barnet

Barnet, North London
£95–£110 per day, depending on experience
Full-time | Long-term

I am recruiting for a SEND Teaching Assistant to join a supportive school in Barnet, working with pupils who require additional help with communication, engagement and independence.

This role would suit someone who already has experience supporting children or young people with autism, communication needs or wider SEND, and who understands that the best support is not about doing everything for a pupil — it is about helping them become more confident, regulated and independent over time.

The school is looking for someone calm, observant and consistent who can build positive relationships while maintaining clear boundaries and routines.

The role

You will work closely with teaching and SEND staff to support pupils who may need additional help accessing learning and navigating the school day.

Your responsibilities may include:

  • Providing 1:1 and small-group SEND support

  • Supporting pupils with autism and communication differences

  • Helping pupils understand routines, expectations and transitions

  • Using visual support and structured approaches where appropriate

  • Encouraging communication, interaction and independence

  • Supporting pupils during periods of anxiety or dysregulation

  • Adapting classroom activities so pupils can participate successfully

  • Recording relevant observations and feeding back to teaching staff

  • Working collaboratively with teachers, support staff and the wider SEND team

Who are we looking for?

Essential:

  • Previous experience working with children or young people

  • Experience supporting SEND, autism or communication needs

  • A calm, reliable and consistent approach

  • Good communication skills

  • Confidence working closely with individual pupils

  • An understanding of professional boundaries and safeguarding

Desirable:

  • Previous experience as a SEN Teaching Assistant, SEND Teaching Assistant or Learning Support Assistant

  • Experience within a specialist provision or SEND-focused classroom

  • Knowledge of visual communication or structured teaching approaches

  • Experience supporting emotional regulation or sensory needs

What makes this role worth considering?

This is a good opportunity for someone who wants to build meaningful experience in SEND rather than work in a purely general classroom support position.

You will have the chance to develop a strong understanding of individual pupils, work alongside experienced education professionals and see the progress that can come from consistent, well-planned support.

The role could particularly suit someone considering a longer-term career in SEND education, teaching, psychology, speech and language therapy or occupational therapy.
