Perhaps where you are working right now, you are focused on just getting through the day and supporting your pupils as best as you can, and so maybe the setting you are working in doesn't accommodate how you truly want to support neurodiverse pupils?

Maybe you have worked in this setting for a number of years, and things have changed, and on reflection, you have realised that supporting and teaching pupils with additional needs has taken a backseat.

From the moment you step into the setting, it is clear that they care, have an unwavering love of the job, and believe in their pupils!

This is not a school that is afraid of championing their pupils, and from the outset, you not only hear of their vision to provide for their pupils, you see it first-hand!

The school

The school offers a welcoming, supportive environment and genuinely values staff wellbeing, with excellent incentives including dedicated HR support, regular social events, and wellbeing support/activities.

It is conveniently located, with excellent transport links, and is easily accessible from Victoria, London Liverpool Street, St Pancras International, Sutton, and East Croydon via the ThamesLink.

About the Role

You will develop, lead, and manage the strategy, resources, and practices required to meet the needs of pupils with SEND, ensuring all learners can fully access the curriculum and achieve strong outcomes.

Working closely with senior leaders, teachers, support staff, families, and external professionals, you will oversee SEND systems and provision across the academy while leading and developing a dedicated team of support staff. The school feels it's important that the appropriate SENDCo has a very flexible, adaptable approach, as you will be wearing many different hats. The role will involve getting stuck in straight away and being proactive, but what the school offers in return is a supportive senior leadership team and provisions in place to alleviate duties when needed.

Key Responsibilities

  • Must be confident enough to model high-quality teaching, conduct observations, and be observed themselves

  • Lead and strategically manage SEND provision

  • The role includes a teaching requirement, with a maximum of 10 periods(out of a 26-period cycle), depending on subject specialism, which could be lower

  • Beyond technical skills, the school wants someone to take ownership of the SEND department and really care for this area, nurturing the SEND department and focusing specifically on rebuilding transition plans and relationships with KS3 pupils

  • Manage and develop a team of Teaching Assistants and SEND support colleagues

  • Coordinate EHCPs, annual reviews, referrals, and new applications

  • Implement local and national learning strategies (literacy, numeracy, KS3/KS4/KS5)

  • Support inclusive teaching practices across departments

  • Work collaboratively with families and external agencies - this is vital as the school value their pupils and their families

  • You will have the support of a SEND Administrator/TAs and Deputy SENDCo

Ideal Candidate

  • Must hold NASENCo or NPQSENDCo

  • Must be a Secondary trained teacher/SEND specialist teacher with a background in teaching in secondary

  • Strong knowledge of SEND legislation and best practice

  • Confident in leading annual reviews and managing EHCP/IEP processes

  • Experienced in leading teams and delivering staff training

  • Able to work proactively and independently within a busy secondary setting

  • Passionate about inclusion and improving outcomes for young people
