Contract: Permanent, full-time, term-time only (36 hours per week)
Working Hours: Monday–Thursday, 2:00pm–10:15pm; Friday, 9:00am–2:00pm
Salary: Scale 6 (Points 13–17), dependent on experience
Parker Smith Inclusion is delighted to be working in partnership with a newly established residential special school in Chelmsford. The school provides a safe, structured and nurturing environment for children and young people with additional needs, offering residential provision during the week. A strong emphasis is placed on creating a warm, family-style setting where pupils are supported to thrive socially, emotionally and academically.
We are currently seeking a Senior Residential Childcare Officer to join the school’s experienced and dedicated residential team. This is an excellent opportunity for an individual with experience in residential childcare or special educational needs who is ready to progress into a senior role within a well-organised and supportive environment.
The Role
As a Senior Residential Childcare Officer, your responsibilities will include:

Taking a senior position within the residential team, supporting the Head of Residential in leading afternoon and evening shifts

Overseeing and actively participating in daily childcare duties, ensuring the highest standards of care and safeguarding are maintained

Supervising and supporting Residential Childcare Officers, including staff induction, mentoring and formal supervision

Acting as a positive role model and leading by example to create a secure, structured and stimulating environment

Working directly with children and young people to support their social, emotional and behavioural development through planned activities and day-to-day interactions

Supervising mealtimes, recreational activities and bedtime routines, ensuring a calm, safe and nurturing atmosphere

Accompanying pupils to appointments and community activities when required

Maintaining accurate records and producing clear, concise reports to contribute to individual care and education plans

Participating in staff training, team meetings and ongoing professional development

Ensuring compliance with all relevant safeguarding legislation, including Keeping Children Safe in Education and the National Minimum Standards for Residential Special Schools
About You
The successful candidate will demonstrate:

Experience working with children and young people, ideally within a residential or SEN setting

A relevant Level 3 qualification in childcare or a related field, or a willingness to work towards one

A sound understanding of relevant legislation, including the Children Act and safeguarding procedures

Strong behaviour management skills, with the ability to balance authority and empathy

Excellent organisational skills and the ability to remain calm under pressure

A genuine commitment to the safety, wellbeing and development of children and young people

A full driving licence is desirable, as is the ability to drive a minibus or a willingness to undertake training
