Sensory Support Teaching Assistant - SEND | Barnet
£95–£110 per day, depending on experience
Barnet, North London
Full-time | Long-term
I am looking for a Sensory Support Teaching Assistant to work with pupils who need additional help regulating, engaging and accessing their learning environment.
For some children, a busy classroom, unexpected change or sensory overload can make learning extremely difficult. A skilled Teaching Assistant can make the environment much more manageable by recognising those signs early and responding appropriately.
This role would suit someone with experience in SEND, autism, sensory processing or occupational therapy-led strategies.
What will the role involve?
You will work closely with pupils and school staff to help children participate successfully throughout the school day.
Responsibilities may include:
-
Recognising signs of sensory overload or dysregulation
-
Supporting pupils to use appropriate regulation strategies
-
Helping pupils access sensory breaks appropriately
-
Supporting transitions between lessons and activities
-
Adjusting approaches according to individual sensory needs
-
Encouraging increasing independence with regulation
-
Supporting classroom learning
-
Using visual structures and predictable routines
-
Sharing observations with teachers and SEND professionals
Who are we looking for?
Essential:
-
Previous experience supporting children or young people with SEND
-
A calm and observant approach
-
An understanding that behaviour can communicate an unmet need
-
Confidence following individual support strategies
-
Strong teamwork and communication skills
Desirable:
-
Sensory processing experience
-
Autism experience
-
Occupational therapy-related experience
-
Special school or specialist provision experience
-
Experience using sensory circuits or regulation programmes
Formal occupational therapy qualifications are not required for this Teaching Assistant position.
Why consider this role?
This is a good opportunity to develop an area of SEND knowledge that is increasingly important within both mainstream and specialist education.
You will gain practical experience understanding how sensory needs can influence concentration, communication, emotional regulation and behaviour.
