Have you seen an autistic pupil relax once the day finally makes sense to them?

I am working with a specialist school in West London that needs a qualified Special School Teacher. The role starts as a long-term post and leads to a permanent contract.

The role and the school

The school supports pupils from primary to secondary school age. Many are autistic, and others have moderate or severe learning difficulties. You will teach a small class, with teaching assistants working alongside you every day. Pupils communicate in different ways, including speech, signing and symbols, so you will use a range of communication tools.

Lessons here are practical and visual, and they move at the pupils’ pace. A good lesson might be a cooking task that builds counting and turn-taking skills, or a sensory story that helps a pupil communicate their choice. You will measure progress in clear, small steps that link back to each pupil’s EHCP.

The school is well-resourced and invests in regular staff training and career development. Teachers plan together and share what works, so you will have colleagues to talk ideas through with. Staff also have access to an employee assistance programme and wellbeing support.

This suits a teacher who wants time to know each pupil well. Starting long-term gives you and the school time to get to know each other before the permanent contract begins.

The school is easy to reach from Twickenham and Staines-upon-Thames, with good rail links nearby.

What you will do

  • Plan and teach a small class of autistic pupils and pupils with MLD or SLD
  • Adapt lessons using visual, practical and sensory approaches
  • Lead and guide the teaching assistants in your class
  • Set and review small, clear targets linked to each pupil’s EHC Plan
  • Work with families and colleagues to keep routines consistent between home and school

About you

  • You enjoy working with autistic pupils and pupils with learning difficulties
  • You hold QTS
  • You plan clearly and adapt quickly when a lesson needs to change
  • Experience in a special school or resourced provision would suit you well
  • Mainstream teachers with strong SEND experience, or who have run small intervention groups, are welcome to apply
