Imagine a classroom where every small moment of connection is celebrated. A look, a gesture, a sound, each one meaningful. This is the everyday reality in a specialist primary school in East London that is now looking for a teacher to join their team from September on a permanent basis.
The children here experience the world in unique ways, and the school is built around understanding that. Many pupils are not yet using spoken language, so communication comes alive through approaches such as PECS, Makaton and core boards. Staff meet each child where they are, shaping learning around their individual needs through a sensory aware and highly personalised curriculum.
In this setting, learning does not sit still. It moves, it adapts, it responds. One moment might be messy, creative and hands on, the next calm and reflective. The focus is always on making sure children feel safe, engaged and ready to explore. Behaviour is understood as communication, and support is rooted in patience, consistency and care.
Classes are small, which allows time to really get to know each child. With a strong team around you in the classroom, there is space to build trust, notice progress and celebrate it in ways that truly matter.
You will not be working alone. Therapists are part of daily school life, working side by side with teachers to bring speech and language and occupational support into the classroom naturally. There is also access to outdoor learning spaces and a well resourced sensory and soft play area, offering even more opportunities for pupils to learn and develop.
This role could be the next step for someone with experience in autism, or the beginning of a journey into special education for a teacher coming from mainstream. What matters most is your ability to connect, your creativity, and your belief that every child deserves an education that feels meaningful and accessible.
