Specialist SEND Teaching Opportunities in Havering
Imagine a classroom where every small moment of connection is meaningful. A look, a gesture, a sound, a new way of communicating. In specialist education, progress does not always look the way you expect it to, but that does not make it any less important.
We are regularly looking to speak with teachers who are interested in working in specialist SEND schools across Havering.
The schools we work with support children with a range of additional needs, including autism, and take a highly individual approach to learning. Many pupils may not yet be using spoken language, so communication can come through approaches such as PECS, Makaton and core boards.
Learning in these settings is often practical, sensory and highly personalised. Activities are adapted around the children, with teachers encouraged to think creatively about how to engage pupils and make learning accessible.
Behaviour is also understood in context. Staff take the time to understand what a child may be communicating through their behaviour, with support built around patience, consistency and clear boundaries.
Classes are often small, giving teachers the opportunity to really get to know their pupils, build trust and recognise progress that might otherwise be missed.
You will also have support around you. Depending on the school, you may work alongside teaching assistants, therapists and other specialists, with speech and language and occupational therapy strategies becoming part of everyday classroom practice.
Specialist facilities can include sensory spaces, soft play areas and outdoor learning environments, giving children different ways to explore, communicate and develop.
These opportunities could suit an experienced SEND teacher, particularly someone with a background in autism, or a mainstream teacher who is considering a move into specialist education.
You do not need to have worked in a specialist setting before. What matters is that you are patient, adaptable and genuinely interested in understanding how individual children learn. A willingness to try different approaches and learn from the team around you is just as important as previous experience.
