Specialist SEND Teaching Opportunities – Havering
Are you a teacher looking for a role where building relationships, understanding individual needs and celebrating every step of progress really matters?
We are currently keen to hear from teachers interested in specialist SEND teaching opportunities across Havering.
The schools we work with support pupils with a wide range of additional needs, including autism. Every child is viewed as an individual, with teaching and communication approaches adapted to help them access learning in a way that works for them.
In these settings, communication can look very different from a mainstream classroom. Some pupils may be non-speaking or at an early stage of developing communication, with staff using approaches such as PECS, Makaton and core boards to support interaction and independence.
What could you expect?
🌱 Individualised learning – Lessons are adapted around pupils' abilities, interests and needs.
🎨 Practical and sensory teaching – Learning may involve sensory activities, outdoor experiences, play-based approaches and hands-on tasks.
💬 Alternative communication – You may support pupils using a range of communication strategies and visual resources.
🧩 A positive approach to behaviour – Staff focus on understanding the reasons behind behaviour and what a pupil may be trying to communicate, while providing consistent boundaries and support.
🤝 Strong teamwork – Depending on the setting, you could work closely with teaching assistants, therapists and other specialists, incorporating speech and language or occupational therapy strategies into everyday teaching.
🏫 Specialist environments – Schools may offer facilities such as sensory rooms, soft play areas and dedicated outdoor spaces to support different aspects of learning and development.
With smaller class groups, you can really get to know your pupils, build trusting relationships and recognise the progress they make — including the small achievements that can mean so much.
Who are we looking for?
These roles could be a great fit for an experienced SEND teacher, particularly those with autism experience, but they may also suit a mainstream teacher considering a move into specialist education.
Previous specialist-school experience is not essential. We are interested in teachers who are:
