Make a Difference in a Specialist SEND Setting

Supporting children with complex needs is about far more than education. It is about building trust, understanding individual communication styles, and creating an environment where every child can thrive.

We are working with a specialist SEND school in Havering that supports pupils with complex learning needs, autism, sensory processing differences, and medical needs. In this setting, progress is measured in many ways, whether that is increased engagement, improved emotional regulation, stronger communication skills, or growing independence and confidence.

The school is looking for calm, compassionate, and resilient individuals to join their team as a Specialist Complex Needs Mentor.

The Role

As a Specialist Complex Needs Mentor, you will play a vital role in supporting pupils both academically and emotionally throughout the school day.

Your responsibilities will include:

• Supporting pupils on a one to one basis and in small group settings
• Encouraging engagement through sensory strategies, structured routines, and communication support
• Assisting with personal care where required
• Supporting emotional regulation using trauma informed and therapeutic approaches
• Working closely with teachers, therapists, and specialist staff to provide consistent support

While the role can be challenging at times, it is also incredibly rewarding. You will be part of a supportive and experienced team who will provide guidance and training throughout your journey.

Who Would Suit This Role?

You may already have experience within SEND education, or you may come from a background such as:

• Care and support work
• Youth work and mentoring
• Residential childcare
• Mental health support
• Psychology or related studies

Most importantly, you will be patient, emotionally resilient, and genuinely passionate about supporting children with complex needs to reach their full potential.

This opportunity is ideal for someone looking to build a long term career within specialist education while making a meaningful difference every day.
