London Borough of Havering

Some progress isn't measured by test scores. It might be a child making eye contact for the first time, joining in with an activity they would usually avoid, or finding a new way to communicate. Those are the moments that matter in this role.

We're working with a specialist school in Havering where every child learns differently. The pupils have a range of complex learning needs, including autism, sensory processing differences and medical needs. The school is looking for people who understand that supporting children is about building trust, creating consistency and helping every pupil feel safe enough to learn.

As a Specialist Complex Needs Mentor, you'll spend your day supporting pupils both in the classroom and around the school. Some children will need one-to-one support, while others will benefit from working in small groups. You'll use sensory strategies and structured routines to encourage engagement, support communication in whatever way works best for each child, assist with personal care when required, and help pupils regulate their emotions. You'll work closely with teachers, therapists and other specialist staff to make sure every child receives consistent support throughout the day.

No two days are the same. Some days will be challenging, but they'll also be full of moments that remind you why this work matters.

This role would suit someone who is patient, observant and able to stay calm when things don't go to plan. You might already have experience in SEND education, or your background could be in care, youth work, residential childcare, mental health support or psychology. Experience is valuable, but your approach and willingness to learn are just as important.

The school offers a supportive environment where you'll receive guidance and training from an experienced team. If you're looking to build a career in specialist education, this is a place where you can develop your skills while making a genuine difference to children's lives.

At Parker Smith Inclusion, we work exclusively within SEND education. We know our schools well and take the time to understand what both candidates and schools are looking for. Our aim is to match people with roles where they can grow and feel supported, not simply fill vacancies.

If you'd like to find out more about the school or the role, we'd love to hear from you.
