This is a role where the small wins really matter.
A special school in Havering is looking for a Specialist Complex Needs Practitioner to join their team from September. This is not your typical classroom support role. The pupils you will be working with have complex needs and require adults around them who are patient, consistent, observant and genuinely invested in helping them develop.
Progress here can look very different.
It might be a pupil becoming confident enough to enter the classroom independently.
It might be finding a new way for a child to communicate what they need.
It might be successfully managing a transition that previously caused real anxiety.
It might be developing a new level of independence.
And sometimes, it is simply recognising that a child has had a brilliant day because you understood them and knew exactly how to support them.
Those moments matter.
The school is looking for someone who understands that working with complex needs is about getting to know the individual, not trying to make every child fit the same approach.
You will need to be confident adapting your support throughout the day and understanding that what works brilliantly for one pupil may not work for another.
You could be supporting communication, sensory needs, emotional regulation, behaviour, independence and learning, working closely with teachers, support staff and other professionals.
What will make you right for this role?
You will ideally have experience supporting children or young people with complex SEND, either within a special school, specialist setting or a mainstream school with significant SEND provision.
You will be calm when situations become challenging.
You will understand the importance of consistency and routine.
You will have the patience to build trust with a child who may take time to accept your support.
You will be able to recognise the small changes that other people might miss.
You will be comfortable working as part of a wider team and taking guidance from experienced colleagues and specialist professionals.
Most importantly, you will genuinely care about helping children become more confident, more independent and more able to communicate and engage with the world around them.
This is the kind of role where you go home knowing that what you did that day genuinely mattered.
The position is initially temporary from September, with a genuine opportunity to become permanent for the right person.
