Speech, Language & Communication Teaching Assistant – Camden
£95–£110 per day | Full-time | SEND / SLCN / Autism Support
Communication is about much more than speech.
For some pupils, it can mean learning how to express a need, make a choice, understand a routine, manage frustration or connect with another person.
We are working with a SEND setting in Camden looking for a Speech, Language & Communication Teaching Assistant to support pupils who need additional help with communication, interaction and accessing learning.
This could be an excellent role for an experienced SEN Teaching Assistant, SEND Teaching Assistant or Learning Support Assistant, as well as someone with a background or degree in Psychology, Speech and Language, Linguistics, Childhood Studies or Education.
What will you be doing?
You will work alongside teachers and wider professionals to help pupils develop their communication and engagement throughout the school day.
Responsibilities may include:

Supporting pupils with speech, language and communication needs

Reinforcing communication strategies used within the setting
-
Supporting pupils to understand instructions, routines and transitions

Encouraging interaction, confidence and independence

Using visual communication and structured approaches where appropriate

Supporting learning in small groups and on a one-to-one basis

Observing how pupils communicate and adapting your approach accordingly

Working closely with teachers and other professionals involved in pupil support
The role requires someone who notices the small things.
A change in facial expression.
A pupil trying to communicate without using words.
A moment where frustration could be prevented by giving someone a little more processing time.

Desirable:

Experience supporting pupils with SLCN or autism

Experience as a SEN Teaching Assistant, SEND Teaching Assistant or Learning Support Assistant

Knowledge of visual communication approaches

Psychology, Speech and Language, Linguistics, Education or Childhood Studies background

Previous experience working alongside therapists or specialist professionals
