Support Worker – Secondary School Setting

Location: Hackney
Hours: Monday–Friday, 8:30 - 4:30 Full Time, Term Time Only
Start Date: Immediate Start
Contract: Long Term contract, 1 year fixed term.

We are looking for a caring, professional and experienced Support Worker to join a secondary school and provide dedicated support to a 16-year-old male learner with additional support needs.

This is a rewarding opportunity for someone who is passionate about supporting young people and who can provide consistent, respectful and person-centred care within a busy secondary school environment.

The Role

The successful candidate will work closely with the learner, school staff and other professionals to provide day-to-day support and ensure his safety, dignity and wellbeing throughout the school day.

The role will include:

  • Providing personal care and support as required.
  • Assisting with changing and toileting in a respectful and dignified manner.
  • Supporting the learner with manual handling and hoisting.
  • Following appropriate moving and handling procedures and risk assessments.
  • Supporting the learner to access lessons, activities and the wider school environment.
  • Encouraging independence and participation wherever possible.
  • Building a positive, professional and trusting relationship with the learner.
  • Working collaboratively with teachers, support staff and other professionals.
  • Maintaining confidentiality and adhering to school safeguarding policies and procedures.
  • Recording relevant information and reporting any concerns appropriately.
  • Maintaining clear professional boundaries at all times.

About You

We are looking for someone who is reliable, patient, compassionate and confident in providing personal care and physical support to a young person.

Previous experience in one or more of the following areas would be highly beneficial:

  • Support work
  • Special educational needs (SEND)
  • Childcare
  • Health and social care
  • Education
  • Personal care
  • Working with young people with additional needs

Experience of hoisting and manual handling is essential, and candidates must hold relevant training/qualifications appropriate to the duties of the role.

You must also understand the importance of professionalism within a secondary school environment, including appropriate boundaries, confidentiality, safeguarding and respectful communication.

Essential Requirements

  • Previous experience supporting children, young people or vulnerable individuals.
  • Relevant manual handling/moving and handling training.
  • Relevant hoisting training/qualification.
  • Confidence providing personal care, including changing and toileting support.
  • A professional and respectful approach to working with a 16-year-old learner.
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills.
  • Reliability and commitment to a full-time, Monday–Friday, term-time position.
  • Willingness to work in accordance with school safeguarding procedures.
  • Ability to successfully complete the required Child and Adult DBS checks and all relevant safeguarding checks.
