Trauma-Informed Behaviour Mentor
Location: Harlesden, North West London
Salary: £100 - £120 per day PAYE
Job Type: Full time, Temp to Perm
Start Date: September 2026
About the role
What if challenging behaviour is not the problem, but a sign that something else is going on?
Some young people do not need another consequence.
They need an adult who can understand what sits behind their behaviour, build trust and help them develop safer, more positive ways to respond.
A specialist education setting in Harlesden is looking for a Trauma-Informed Behaviour Mentor to support young people with SEMH, SEND and behavioural needs.
This is a role where your ability to build relationships, remain consistent and understand behaviour can make a genuine difference.
The setting
The setting supports young people with additional needs, including SEMH and behavioural difficulties, within a structured and supportive environment.
The focus is on understanding individual needs, identifying barriers to learning and helping pupils develop emotional regulation, confidence and independence.
Staff work closely together to provide consistent support, clear boundaries and positive relationships throughout the school day.
The role
As a Trauma-Informed Behaviour Mentor, you will:
-
Build positive and trusting relationships with pupils
-
Provide one-to-one and small-group mentoring
-
Support emotional regulation and positive behaviour
-
Identify triggers and barriers to learning
-
Use trauma-informed and restorative approaches
-
Encourage positive choices and coping strategies
-
Support pupils to re-engage with learning
-
Work closely with teachers and pastoral staff
-
Maintain consistent boundaries and expectations
-
Support pupils during challenging or heightened situations
-
Record and communicate relevant pastoral and behavioural information
Who we are looking for
This role would suit someone with experience supporting young people who may have challenging behaviour, SEMH or additional needs.
Previous experience as a Behaviour Mentor, Teaching Assistant, Youth Worker, Pastoral Support Worker, Support Worker or similar would be beneficial.
You will be:
-
Calm and patient
-
Resilient and emotionally intelligent
-
Consistent in your approach
-
Confident managing challenging behaviour
-
Able to build strong relationships
-
Comfortable maintaining boundaries
-
Non-judgemental and empathetic
-
A strong communicator
Experience within SEMH, SEND, alternative provision, youth work, care or behaviour support would be particularly useful.
Why this role matters
Behaviour is often the first thing people notice.
It is not always the whole story.
A young person who refuses to enter a classroom, becomes angry quickly or struggles to regulate their emotions may not yet have the tools to communicate what is wrong.
The right Behaviour Mentor can help them develop those tools.
Progress might mean returning to class after a difficult morning, managing a disagreement without escalation or beginning to trust an adult again.
Those moments matter.
