How many times have you moved a Maths lesson on while three pupils at the back were still stuck on step one?
I am working with a friendly SEN school in Surrey that needs a Maths HLTA / Maths Teacher with classroom Maths teaching experience. You teach Maths to pupils aged 7 to 16 with Autism, ADHD and SEMH needs, in classes small enough that nobody gets left at step one. This SEND role suits someone who has already taught Maths lessons and wants to become a qualified Maths Teacher.
Why this role is different
You already know how to plan a lesson, pitch it and manage a room. Maybe you learned as a Cover Supervisor, an unqualified Teacher, or an HLTA who ended up taking the Maths groups.
You also know the pupils who slip through. In a class of 30, you plan for them, then the bell goes, and the scheme of work moves on. Here, you get the time to find out why a pupil is stuck, and the freedom to teach it another way until it lands.
If you plan to train, this experience sets you apart. Few applicants can talk about teaching Maths to pupils with SEND. After a year here, you can.
About the school and the pupils
Classes are small, and staffing ratios are high. Teachers, support staff and therapists work side by side, so you never plan for a pupil on your own. Each pupil follows a personalised curriculum, and the whole staff team takes a relational, therapeutic approach. Trust comes first. The learning follows.
The pupils all have Education, Health and Care Plans and range from Key Stage 2 to Key Stage 4. Many experience high anxiety, low confidence and the effects of trauma. For some, Maths lessons were where they felt most exposed in their previous schools.
Picture a pupil who would not open a Maths book in September. By the spring, they ask you for the harder question. That is what this role is for.
The school sits near Leatherhead and is commutable from Guildford, Epsom and Reigate.
What to expect as a Maths HLTA
- Plan and teach Maths to small classes, with the teaching team behind you
- Find the gap behind each pupil's anxiety about Maths, and teach from there
- Adapt lessons for Autism, ADHD and SEMH needs, including processing speed and sensory needs
- Teach older pupils towards their Maths qualifications, at a pace they can manage
- Notice the small wins and share them with staff, so every pupil's plan keeps moving
Who should apply
- You have experience teaching Maths lessons in a classroom, in the UK or overseas
- You have strong Maths subject knowledge, ideally a Maths or STEM degree or A-level Maths
- You have worked with pupils with Autism, ADHD or SEMH, or supported pupils with SEN in a mainstream Maths class
- You are an unqualified Teacher, Cover Supervisor, HLTA or trainee who plans to gain QTS
- You bring patience and a steady manner. An HLTA qualification is not required.
