You have been teaching. You know you can do this. You just do not have QTS yet.

If you are an experienced unqualified Maths Teacher who is ready to formalise your practice and gain Qualified Teacher Status through the Assessment Only route, this could be the right moment and the right place.

This is a rare opportunity at a specialist school in Surrey for pupils with Autism (ASC) and Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs. The school is open to supporting the right candidate through the AO route to QTS, which means you could be teaching, developing, and qualifying all at once.

What is the assessment-only route?

The Assessment Only route allows experienced, unqualified teachers to gain QTS without completing a full teacher training programme. There are no taught components. Instead, you are assessed against the Teachers' Standards based on evidence from your existing practice. You need to demonstrate that you already meet the standards across your teaching.

To be eligible, you will typically need a degree, at least two years of substantial classroom teaching experience, and the ability to evidence your practice across two different age groups or settings.

If that sounds like you, read on.

The school

This is a small, thoughtfully designed specialist school. Every part of it has been built around the needs of pupils who experience the world differently. You will work with young people whose needs include Autism, SEMH, ADHD, and associated communication and sensory processing differences.

These are pupils who have often not thrived in mainstream settings. What they need is consistency, structure, genuine relationships, and a teacher who understands that learning looks different for every individual.

The school provides:

  • Small class sizes with strong staff-to-student ratios

  • Dedicated therapeutic support, with therapists working alongside teaching staff daily

  • Outdoor learning and forest school provision

  • High-quality resources and well-designed classroom environments

  • A leadership team that is hands-on, approachable, and genuinely invested in staff development

What the role involves

  • Planning and delivering Maths lessons adapted to individual pupil needs and learning profiles

  • Working closely with therapists and support staff to understand each pupil holistically

  • Using trauma-informed and sensory-aware approaches in your teaching

  • Contributing to Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP) reviews and pupil progress tracking

  • Adapting your communication and teaching style to support non-verbal or communication-different pupils

  • Navigating dysregulation calmly and consistently, with the support of a strong team around you

This is not a role where you deliver a lesson and move on. You will be building real relationships with your pupils over time. That continuity matters enormously in a specialist setting.

Who will thrive here?

You do not need QTS. You do need experience, patience, and a genuine reason for wanting to work in SEND.

The right person for this role has probably spent time in classrooms or learning environments and already knows that this is where they belong. You are adaptable. You read a room. You understand that behaviour is communication. You are consistent under pressure.

You may come from a tutoring background, a HLTA or cover supervisor role, youth work, or a degree in a Maths-related subject combined with classroom experience. What matters most is that your commitment to supporting young people is real.
