Unqualified SEN Teaching Assistant
Kingston upon Thames
ASAP start, full-time (term time only)
£90 – £95 per day, PAYE only, paid weekly
This is not a stepping-stone job for someone who just needs “something for now”.
This SEN Teaching Assistant role is for someone who genuinely wants to work with children and young people with complex needs, and who understands that progress in SEND does not always look quick or academic, but it is deeply meaningful.
I am working with a well-established, outstanding specialist SEN setting in the Kingston area that supports children and young people with:
- Autism / ASC
- Severe Learning Difficulties (SLD)
- Profound and Multiple Learning Difficulties (PMLD)
- Complex communication and sensory needs
The environment is play-based, sensory-led and relationship-driven. Children are supported to feel safe, regulated and understood before learning is ever expected.
What the SEN Teaching Assistant role really looks like:
You will be part of a small class setting (up to 8 pupils), supported by 2–4 adults, where teamwork genuinely matters.
Your day will involve:
- Supporting pupils through sensory and play-based learning
- Helping children communicate, explore and regulate in their own way
- Supporting with daily routines and personal care where required
- Working alongside teachers, therapists and experienced SEN staff
- Taking part in hydrotherapy sessions (you do not need to be a strong swimmer, just willing)
- Celebrating progress that might look small on paper, but is huge in real life
This is hands-on, immersive work. You will be on the floor, outdoors, in the pool, and fully involved in the day.
Who this SEN Teaching Assistant role is for:
You do not need formal qualifications, but you do need the right mindset.
This role suits people who:
- Have genuine experience or exposure to SEND (work, volunteering, family or personal)
- Are calm, patient, emotionally intelligent and resilient
- Are comfortable with personal care and physical aspects of the role
- Want consistency and commitment, not short-term experience
- Are open to learning and being guided by specialist professionals
Common backgrounds that do well here:
- Psychology, education or health & social care backgrounds
- Care or support work (children or adults)
- Personal interests and experience in SEND
If you are uncomfortable with complexity, unpredictability or personal care, this role will not be suitable and honesty matters.
What you will gain:
- A supportive, experienced SEN team who do not leave people to sink
- Clear expectations and strong leadership
- PAYE pay only
- Weekly pay, transparent rates
- A role where you are genuinely valued, not just needed
