Unqualified SEND Teacher - KS5 Autism Class
Barnet, North London | £150–£190 per day PAYE | Full-time | Specialist SEND School
If you have strong SEND experience and feel ready to take responsibility for your own class, this could be the step up you have been looking for.
Parker Smith Inclusion is recruiting an Unqualified SEND Teacher to lead a KS5 autism class within a specialist SEND school in Barnet.
The pupils are older, but their academic learning is at an early developmental level, so this role is less about traditional secondary teaching and more about creating meaningful, highly differentiated learning that supports communication, independence and engagement.
You will be supported by an experienced classroom team, making this a strong opportunity for someone who already understands SEND and is ready to move beyond a traditional Teaching Assistant or HLTA role.
The role
You will take responsibility for the day-to-day running of the class, including:
- Planning and delivering highly differentiated learning
- Supporting pupils with autism and significant learning needs
- Adapting activities to suit early developmental levels
- Developing communication, engagement and independence
- Creating clear routines and a predictable learning environment
- Leading and directing classroom support staff
- Monitoring pupil progress and contributing to individual targets
- Working closely with the wider SEND and therapy team
- Maintaining high expectations while recognising that progress will look different for every pupil
Who are we looking for?
Essential:
- Strong experience working within SEND
- Experience supporting autistic children or young people
- Confidence leading learning or taking responsibility for a group
- Ability to differentiate work significantly
- Calm and consistent classroom management
- Confidence working with and directing support staff
- Full-time availability
Particularly suitable for:
- Experienced SEND Teaching Assistants
- HLTAs ready to step up
- Existing Unqualified Teachers
- Cover Supervisors with strong SEND experience
- Experienced support staff considering teacher training
- Teachers without QTS who have substantial specialist education experience
QTS is not essential for this role.
Why consider this opportunity?
If you have worked in SEND for several years, you may already be doing many of the things expected of a teacher: leading activities, adapting work, managing routines and supporting less experienced staff.
This role gives you the opportunity to take that experience further and lead your own class within a supportive specialist environment.
It would particularly suit someone who values progress in communication, independence, confidence and engagement just as much as traditional academic outcomes.
Pay: £150–£190 per day PAYE, depending on experience.
