Music Production & Digital Media Tutor – SEMH

Location: Islington, North London
Working Pattern: Fridays only
Contract: Part-time
Start Date: Immediate

Turn your passion for music and media into a positive opportunity for young people

Parker Smith Inclusion is working with a specialist education setting in Islington to recruit a creative and enthusiastic Music Production and Digital Media Tutor to work with young people with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs.

This is a fantastic opportunity for someone with a background in music production, sound engineering or digital media who wants to use their creative skills to make a meaningful difference.

For young people who have found traditional classroom environments challenging, creative subjects can offer a different way to engage with learning, express themselves and discover their potential. Through music, technology and digital content creation, you will help pupils develop practical skills, build confidence and explore future opportunities within the creative industries.

This role is based at a site in Islington and takes place on Fridays only, making it an excellent opportunity for an experienced creative professional or tutor looking for a part-time commitment.

About the role

You will deliver engaging, practical sessions in music production, sound engineering and digital media, supporting learners to develop their technical abilities and, where appropriate, work towards recognised vocational qualifications.

Alongside teaching creative skills, you will create a supportive learning environment where young people feel encouraged to experiment, communicate and take pride in their achievements.

Key responsibilities

  • Plan and deliver engaging music production, sound engineering and digital media sessions, with opportunities to work towards Level 1 and Level 2 qualifications through awarding bodies such as NCFE, RSL and Pearson BTEC.
  • Teach practical skills including beatmaking, songwriting, audio recording, mixing, podcast production and digital content creation.
  • Support learners to use industry-standard digital audio workstations, such as Logic Pro, Ableton Live and FL Studio, alongside relevant audio and visual editing software.
  • Introduce students to video production, basic graphic design and other creative media projects where appropriate.
  • Encourage pupils to use music and creative media as positive outlets for self-expression, storytelling and exploring their interests and identities.
  • Adapt sessions to meet individual learning needs, including those associated with SEMH, autism, ADHD, neurodivergence and previous difficult experiences of education.
  • Build positive, trusting relationships with young people who may be reluctant to engage with traditional learning.
  • Use trauma-informed, nurturing and positive behaviour support approaches to help pupils manage emotions, navigate challenges and return to learning.
  • Maintain a safe, organised and accessible studio environment, ensuring equipment is cared for and used appropriately.
  • Assess practical work, maintain student portfolios and ensure that coursework meets the requirements of the relevant awarding body.
  • Monitor learners' progress, including vocational development and individual targets linked to their wider educational needs.
  • Follow safeguarding procedures carefully, including raising concerns promptly with the Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL).

Who are we looking for?

We are looking for a creative, approachable and resilient individual who can combine strong technical knowledge with an understanding of how to engage young people who may have struggled in mainstream education.

You might be an experienced music producer, sound engineer, digital media professional or vocational tutor looking to share your knowledge in a specialist educational setting.

Essential requirements

  • A degree or Level 3 or higher qualification in Music Technology, Sound Engineering, Digital Media or a related creative subject.
  • Practical or professional experience in music production, studio engineering or digital media creation.
  • Strong working knowledge of digital audio workstations, such as Logic Pro, Ableton Live or FL Studio, and relevant creative editing tools.
  • Confidence delivering practical, engaging activities that develop learners' technical skills.
  • Patience, emotional awareness and the ability to remain calm and consistent when working in challenging situations.
  • A flexible, empathetic approach to supporting young people with additional needs.
  • A commitment to safeguarding and creating a safe, inclusive learning environment.
  • An Enhanced DBS certificate, or willingness to complete the required checks.

Why consider this opportunity?

  • A creative way to make a difference: Use music and digital media to help young people engage with education and recognise their abilities.

  • A meaningful specialist setting: Contribute to an environment where individual needs, positive relationships and personal development matter.

  • A chance to inspire: Help learners develop practical skills and explore potential routes into further education, training and the creative industries.

  • A clear working pattern: Work on Fridays only at a site in Islington, ideal for someone seeking a regular part-time opportunity.

Safeguarding

The setting is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people. The successful candidate will be expected to follow all relevant safeguarding policies and procedures, including Keeping Children Safe in Education guidance, and complete the necessary pre-employment and Enhanced DBS checks.
