Year 1 SEND Teaching Assistant – Personal Care & Independence Support
Barnet | £95–£110 per day | Full-time
This role needs someone who can approach personal care with exactly the same thing every child deserves: dignity, patience and encouragement.
Parker Smith Inclusion is recruiting a 1:1 SEND Teaching Assistant to support a young pupil in Year 1 within an inclusive mainstream primary school in Barnet.
The pupil is keen to be independent and manages many aspects of the school day well. However, he currently requires additional support around toileting and personal care.
The school's priority is to help him develop greater independence rather than simply doing everything for him.
Your role
Alongside supporting learning and participation within the classroom, you will provide discreet and sensitive support with personal care.
Responsibilities will include:
-
Supporting the pupil 1:1 throughout the school day
-
Encouraging independence within classroom routines
-
Providing appropriate toileting and personal care support
-
Maintaining the pupil's dignity and privacy at all times
-
Supporting communication around personal needs
-
Reinforcing routines consistently
-
Helping the pupil participate confidently alongside his peers
-
Working closely with the class teacher and SEND staff
-
Gradually encouraging greater independence wherever appropriate
Who would suit this position?
You need to be comfortable providing personal care and able to approach it naturally and professionally.
Essential:
-
Comfortable supporting a child with toileting and personal care
-
Patient, nurturing and reliable
-
Able to encourage independence rather than automatically doing tasks for the pupil
-
Experience working with children
-
Full-time availability
Desirable:
-
Previous SEND Teaching Assistant experience
-
EYFS or KS1 experience
-
Experience supporting personal care
-
Nursery, care or healthcare experience
Experience in a school would be useful, but relevant childcare, nursery, SEND or care experience could also transfer extremely well.
Why consider this role?
For a child this young, learning to manage their own personal needs can have a significant impact on confidence, inclusion and independence.
You will be supporting something that may seem small from the outside but can make a genuine difference to how comfortably and confidently a child participates in school.
£95–£110 per day, depending on experience.
